The summer season is upon us, and with it, a fresh batch of new anime series! With so many awesome titles to choose from, I thought I would take a moment to pick out the top 5 that seem to have the most promise.
Glasslip – From the producers that brought us Chrono Crusade and Angel Beats!, Glasslip follows the journey of 17 year old Touko Fukami as she seeks to become a glass artisan. This one seems promising if for no other reason than the unique premise. Add to that the fact that Lantis and P.A. works have released some great shows in the past on their own, I’m optimistic for this joint venture and look forward to this slice of life series! It’s available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
Sword Art Online 2 – A direct sequel to the largely popular series from last year, SAO 2 follows Kirito into a new virtual world: a shooter-based game called Gun Gale Online (GGO). A player within the game seems to have the ability to kill players in real life through the use of a mysterious weapon known as the “Death Gun”, and Kirito has been tasked with finding this avatar and ending his killing spree. While some were put off by SAO last year in its final episodes, this series is still one to keep an eye on. It’s available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Crystal – The classic returns this summer with a beautifully reincarnated animated series! Based on Naoko Takeuchi’s manga, Sailor Moon follows the journey of Usagi Tuskino, a 14-year old girl who discovers that she is actually a guardian of the solar system known as “Sailor Moon”. If you follow anime, chances are you’ve caught a whiff of the hype that this show is generating. Fans of the series are excited for the fresh animation style and re-assigned voice actors. For new fans, this is a great way to be introduced to an anime that served as a gateway for many millenials. Definitely worth a watch! It’s available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
Barakamon – Another series falling within a pretty niche category, Barakamon tells the story of a young calligrapher Handa Seishu, who, after punching a world famous calligrapher, is exiled to a small island as punishment. A city boy through and through, this slice of life series follows his adaptation to country living and the drama the ensues. Seems to be a great series to help you lighten your attitude after some of the heavier series that are debuting this season.
Aldnoah.Zero – One of the most anticipated series of the season, this beautifully animated story chronicles the interplanetary war between Mars and Earth. A giant robot series created by Gen Urobuchi (known for Fate/Zero and Madoka Magica) and with music composed by Hiroyuki Sawano (Kill la Kill), the production value and creative minds behind this series are primarily driving the excitement. A definite series for your “must-watch” list!
Honorable Mention –
Akame ga Kill! – A joint project between Toho animation and Square enix, Akame Ga Kill tells the story of a young fighter seeking to earn some money to help feed his village. Disgusted by the widespread corruption at the center of their society, Akame is recruited into a group known as “Night Raid”, which seeks to end the corrupt regime by ruthlessly assassinating those in charge. I’d definitely recommend keeping an eye on this one!
That’s all for now! Stay tuned for reviews as the season progresses!
